Sugar Hill Luxury Guest Apartment

Details

Home Description

Your pied a terre on Sugar Hill. The secluded, book-lined, self-contained two/three bedroom garden apartment immerses you in Revolutionary history from the Battle of Harlem Heights through the jazz-age Renaissance to its vibrant present. The townhouse looks at the oldest house in Manhattan, the Morris-Jumel Mansion, George Washington’s headquarters for 1776′s Battle of New York and home to the infamous grand horizontal, Madame Eliza Jumel. At the time Duke Ellington dubbed the house “The Crown of Sugar Hill,” the immediate neighborhood was also home to W.E.B. DuBois, Paul Robeson, Count Basie, Lena Horne, Coleman Hawkins, Teddy Wilson, Andy Kirk, Don Redman, Canada Lee, Charles Alston, Dr. Kenneth Clark, Thurgood Marshall, and dozens of other Jazz Masters.
The apartment, in what was an antiquarian bookshop specializing in those subjects, features full kitchen and bath (tub and shower, excellent pressure/hot water), a large bedroom with an antique double bed, a larger bedroom with a queen size, a sitting room with a generous trundle/daybed with desks, cable television, internet access, a/c, cassette tape & record players (plug in for MP3s), tape and LP libraries, and a full ornamental garden with a gas grill. Wine and dine al fresco on Sunday afternoons as the sounds of Marjorie Elliot’s Parlor Jazz waif from her nearby apartment.

Private entrance. In 900 square foot apartment: two or, needs be, three bedrooms, firm antique double and queen sized beds, with a day/trundle bed on a well appointed garden with grill, dining and lounging furniture, a full bath and kitchen, coffee/tea facilities, welcome food supplies (your pleasure: cereal, fresh gourmet coffee, teas, milk/half and half, fresh fruit), desk amenities, cable television, internet access, a record and tape player, and music library, MP3 set up and in depth libraries (over 4000 volumes) on New York City, particularly Harlem, jazz, art, photography, civil rights, all particularly pertinent to Uptown.

Rooms are furnished in a comfortable, eclectic mix with bookish comforts. The apartment functions for one to six, complete with a private entrance and garden. We pride ourselves on the quality of our mattresses. All bedding has high thread counts, is hypo-allergenic and protected. And – this is new – air-conditioning, not that you’re likely to need it.

Cool in the summer, warm in the winter, this may be the quietest apartment in New York City.

Housekeeping service for long stays with management on the premises to assist in your every need.

On premises: library conference rooms, reference libraries, parlor and garden party rentals, computer, internet service, laundry service, cable television, lp, cassette and mp3 players. There is a parlor floor gallery and dining room and a large library suitable for meetings, lectures, photo shoots, and exhibitions. There is a baby grand piano for entertainments. We loved this place

This is a delightful place to stay. The apartment is as charming as it looks online and the owner, Kurt, was extraordinarily accommodating. Highlights: learning about the culture and history of the area from Kurt; walking across the street to hear great jazz. (We just happened to be there during the annual Jazz weekend at the mansion.); wine in the courtyard; perusing the books and jazz albums. Downsides: We were there in heat of summer and the air conditioning could have been better. We would definitely stay again.

The Wedding Party

This is just the best place! My family was in NY to celebrate a wedding. Four of us stayed quite comfortably here. The beds were fabulous—great mattresses and linen sheets. Kurt checked to see what we might like in the fridge for breakfast, and it was ready with coffee, fruit, and bagels when we arrived. There is a lovely back garden lit with tiny lights, comfortable seating; it is a place to relax. Inside Kurt’s brownstone, every room is filled with books and photos of literary people and music. There is so much to look at. Kurt was very helpful to us as we also hosted a brunch and were able to rent two other floors if his house. Our guests were most impressed too and they had a fabulous time. Communication was flawless. I can’t recommend Kurt’s house highly enough.

New Friends from China

Kurt couldn't have been a more gracious and hospitable host. His apartment is exactly as described and in a nice quiet neighborhood. The nearest subway stop was closed for renovation while we were there, but the next closest ones were still a short walk away. I only wish I had more time and better weather to enjoy relaxing in the apartment and the back garden.

Jazz vibe

Kurt’s place is incredibly unique. The entire vibe is like going back in time, from the collection of literature surrounding you to the turntable and jazz records. My colleague and I found ourselves just hanging out listening to music each evening. Kurt was a great host and welcomed me upon arrival with stories about the neighborhood and his library. The backyard courtyard was an added bonus.

Thank you Kurt. You didn't just open your doors late on Christmas Eve to a family of unseasoned travellers ...you shared with us a most special view of New York heritage and culture, past and present. Your beautiful building was very stately yet comfortable. The streetscape is charming and the neighbourhood very safe with convenient access to shops and transport. Thank you for your kindness and hospitality. We will be recommending your accomodation to all our friends, and will return again ourselves for sure.
