Wonderful Cottage on the Quiet Side
We have been to Paul's Cottage twice and have loved it each time. It is right on the cliffs overlooking the bay and the sunsets are spectacular. The cottage is furnished with everything you could need and if something is missing Kathy the owner is nearby and ready to help. Southwest Harbor has several good restaurants so you can avoid the crush of Bar Harbor if you desire. This quiet side of the island is wonderful and we would recommend it anyone visiting Mount Desert Island.

Ideal getaway!!!
My husband and I have been going to Mt. Desert Island for over 45 years to enjoy the spectacular ocean walks and views, mountains, and lakes that the island offers. As much as we loved our twice (or thrice) annual trips to Acadia, the noisy motels/hotels and long restaurant lines were becoming tiresome and diminished our level of enjoyment. We'd often rented cottages elsewhere but had never found a cottage in the Bar Harbor area that we liked until we stumbled upon Paul's Cottage. What we ideally had wanted was a cottage on the ocean with a fireplace that offered both privacy and easy access to Acadia Park. After spending a fall and spring week in Paul's Cottage this past year, we have found it a perfect fit for us, offering many amenities including the following. - situated right on the shore with stunning westerly island and sunset views - welcoming, friendly, and accommodating owners (available but not intrusive) - a large updated kitchen not wanting for anything - fresh lobster and other seafood, produce, groceries, etc. available within a short drive - very good restaurants (especially in season) if desired - Acadia Park sites within easy driving distance - various books and games to enjoy by the huge fireplace (endless supply of firewood available) or on the spacious deck overlooking the water - the Southwest Harbor Library issues guest passes for non-residents for supplemental reading choices We are very much looking forward to our two-week stay this fall and are considering a winter visit at some point.

Paul's Cottage is wonderful
We have been coming to Paul's Cottage for many years. The cottage satisfied a dream we had for a long time. We have been coming to Maine since the middle 1950's and the idea of buying a place on the ocean in Maine had become a strong wish but we could never afford it. Later, with improved financial circumstances, one could contemplate buying a place in Maine, however, then there was simply not enough time to maintain and worry about additional property. Paul's cottage is a perfect answer. It is in an absolutely beautiful location on the water on one of the loveliest places on the East coast. The place is better equipped with amenities than our house in Newton and best of all, when things age and break, we find them repaired and often improved the next year. We cannot think of a better deal!

Our Winter Retreat
We have enjoyed Paul's cottage for our last seven February vacations. Mt Desert Island in the winter is fantastic! A day cross-country skiing or snowshoeing in Acadia is scenic and beautifully quiet. Returning to the cottage each afternoon and enjoying the fireplace, warm beverages, water views, sunsets and seabirds visible right outside the cottage window is heavenly. Sleeping in the loft bedroom, watching the moon, stars and lighthouse beacons is as romantic as it gets. Paul's cottage has everything you need, Kathy is extremely helpful, and we will keep returning to this amazing location. The pictures show it all except the tranquility of winter. We do recommend Paul's cottage to our friends but only if they promise not to compete for our week!

Paul's Cottage is the year-round home where my father-in-law spent his retirement years. Built to resemble a New England barn, the spacious pine-paneled living room features a cathedral ceiling and a granite fireplace that is likely the largest you have ever seen!
There is a bedroom with queen size bed and full bath on the first floor. Over the kitchen and bedroom is a loft area with a full bath and two bedrooms, one with a queen size bed, the other with a small twin and sitting area with skylight. You will absolutely love the new dormer in the upstairs bedroom especially when you are able to look out on to Blue Hill Bay and enjoy the stars and the moon traveling across the clear dark sky. (Due to the relatively small size of the loft bedrooms we limit the total number of guests to five, no exceptions, please.)
Our newly renovated kitchen is well equipped for cooking and serving, with amenities including gas cook top & oven, microwave, coffeemaker, dishwasher and breakfast table.
Mealtime is always more enjoyable with a view of the water. You can sit in front of the window in the dining area or simply go outside to use the picnic table on the deck. In the corner of the living room next to a window with a waterfront view, the landlady insisted on having a game table because she loves to play scrabble, bridge or canasta. Yes, it is a great place to use your computer and we do offer wireless internet connection for those who insist on making contact with the outside world. However, we suggest that you just sit and relax in the large wicker chairs in the living room............relax and enjoy the peace and quiet. Perhaps the best thing to do after all is just step through the large sliding glass doors onto a 400 square foot deck and enjoy the panoramic view of Blue Hill Bay.
We are located between Mitchell and Duck Cove on the western side of Mount Desert Island, so you will find that the spectacular sunsets probably will take your breath away.
As one of my tenants said the minute he got out of the car, 'I think that you have a little bit of heaven here'. I do believe that he is correct. I have to say I do leave a little bit of my heart behind every time I leave Mount Desert Island.
So come and experience the peace and quiet of your home away from home and leave your cares behind.

About The Area
Most of Acadia National Park is located on Mount Desert Island. Google maps shown by the shaded area that it takes up about 50% of the island. You can get to parts of the park in 10 minutes and to Bar Harbor in about 30 minutes. You can hike the mountains and walk or bicycle the carriage paths. Either way you will enjoy the exercise and the beautiful scenery. Kayaking or canoeing in Echo Lake or Long Pond will be a peaceful way to spend the day or afternoon. I love to swim at either place and for the daring and full spirited (like my grandchildren) you can go to Sand Beach and swim & jump the ocean waves. Don't forget to take a boat ride out to one of the islands or try whalewatching too. Thre are plenty of good restaurants throughout the island. The lobster pounds are especially good and the best place to eat your lobster too.
