Spectacular Water & Mountain Views

Home Description

The Bad News: In August, 2017, guests accidentally set the house on fire.*

The Good News: The house has been completely renovated for the 2018 season! New floors, new walls, new ceilings, new kitchen cabinets and appliances, new furniture—all new! [Please note: the renovation is currently underway, so all photos are of the old interior.]

The house is located on the Shore Road between the Hinckley and Manset Town docks in Southwest Harbor on the Quietside of Mount Desert Island, with convenient access to Acadia National Park, hiking, biking, kayaking, the free island shuttle bus and all MDI attractions.

Perched atop a former warehouse, it is surrounded by a huge deck, and affords spectacular views of Southwest Harbor and the mountains of Acadia National Park. The open kitchen/dining/living room area features picture windows and a massive hearth of local stone.

Things to do: Visit Acadia National Park: Hike the trails, bike the carriage roads, swim or fish or boat in the lakes, enjoy Park programs such as ranger-led nature hikes, watch the wildlife, or relax at the beach - this is one of the most spectacular Parks in the National Park System. The hustle and bustle of Bar Harbor is a short drive across the Island, where you can enjoy an amazing variety of tourist activities appealing to any taste or budget. Finally (this is our personal favorite), you can simply relax at home. Send the kids down to fish or out to play in the yard. Sit back on our deck and enjoy the view. Watch the boats in the harbor, enjoy the play of light on the mountains of the Park or the islands offshore, see if you can spot a bald eagle soar overhead, and let yourself unwind.

What's this about a warehouse?: Our house was once a commercial property. It was, at various times, a boat-builder's shop and a lobster pound. There are two large warehouse bays in which we store cars and boats (big boats!) in the winter, and our house is built over one of the bays. However, it is no longer used commercially. *Accidents happen. Renter's insurance is a really good investment.

About The Area

Our house is located on the Manset Shore, in the town of Southwest Harbor on the 'Quietside' of Mt. Desert Island. The town dock is just yards from our driveway, and there you can board the free Island Explorer shuttle bus that serves the entire Island, catch a ferry to the Cranberry Islands, or fish for mackerel (we provide fishing poles). You can launch your kayak at the foot of the driveway, or search for sea glass or shells at low tide. The Manset Shore is a working waterfront, with the Hinckley Yacht Service yards a few blocks away, and you can observe the activities first-hand.  The house is far enough back from the water so it is quiet, but close enough to watch the action.  There are several restaurants within a few blocks of the house. The town of Southwest Harbor is less than 2 miles away, with restaurants, shops, museums, kayak and bicycle and boat rentals, churches, a drug store, banks, and a post office, Acadia National Park is just minutes away, with its mountains, shoreline and lakes. Other Activities: kayaking, whale watching, hiking

House Rules

No smoking on the property. Guests are not to use the fireplace.

Suitability

The house is accessed via a flight of stairs.  This means, unfortuantely, it is not wheelchair accessable.

My family had a wonderful time.

The property was spacious. The owner was incredible responsive. Our view from the balcony was breathtaking and we spent a lot of time eating and enjoying happy hour on the balcony. I highly recommend.

Very pleasant July 4th vacation

We had a very pleasant time at the house during the July 4th week. We arrived very late at night. It's nice the owner left lights on the deck and front of the driveway. We were impressed right away by the beautiful veiw from the deck, starry sky, the quiet harbor, and scent of beach roses The house is clean and full of space. It locates at the quiet side of Acadia yet is close to everything. The owner Carlisle came the next morning. He was very friendly and gave us tons of tips on where to go and what to do. It was our first trip, so that was very helpful. One bonus is that we got to watch the July 4th fireworks right at the deck. We all had a great time and would recommend this place to our friends.

Great Mount Desert Island Vacation Rental

My extended family of eight spent a great week at this fantastic home. It is spacious with four ample bedrooms and two baths that easily accommodated our large group. We cooked many of our meals at the house and it was very well equipped with all the essentials. The most amazing part of this house is its' view. There are gorgeous views of the harbor, boats and islands from the expansive deck and from the large windows in the living/dining rooms. The photos on the site don't do it justice. I would sit on the deck in the morning with my coffee and watch lobster boats chug out of the harbor, the light reflecting over the water. In the evening, we would sit with our glasses of wine and watch the sun set. Paradise. Although the decor may be a bit dated, the house was very clean. The owner, Carlisle, is very responsive and helpful. All in all, a wonderful week in one of my favorite places on earth.

SERENITY!!!

My family and I had an amazing time at this wonderful home. The view at any point of day is stupendous!! It was spacious and had all of the amenities necessary. My teens enjoyed fishing on the pier and I can't tell you how many other activities we took part in. Of course, we could not get enough of the wonderful lobster and I can't speak enough of the blueberry pie that we had to try from various places. The added bonus is there is bus transportation to Bar Harbor nearby for a great choice point. I would recommend this home to any family looking to get away to a slice of heaven!!!
