Charming Owls Head Waterfront Cottage

Home Description

Sunrise Cottage on Mahalas Lane

Located in Owls Head, this quaint and unique 1930s cottage is nestled near the end of Mahalas Lane, a private lane, hence, our email address, [email protected] (505.459.3111). A guest of the cottage, the author, Marianne Cushing, has had published (December 2013) her debut novel, Mahalas Lane (the lane of the cottage), which uses the cottage as a point of reference for her investigation-romance work of art. Overlooking Crocketts Beach and Penobscot Bay, Mahalas Lane is serene and relaxing, a true seaside get-away.

Crocketts Beach, when the tide is out a bit, is a perfectly sandy beach all the way out into the water. Children, less fragile than adults, do not seem to mind at all the refreshing aspects of the Maine water, and enjoy the swimming without having to negotiate bothersome rocks with their feet. (Adults seem to appreciate this pleasing aspect as well.)

Crocketts Beach is especially well-suited for kayaking and provides for a nice ability to explore, by kayak, Seaglass Island (a very small island about 1/4 mile off the beach which you can almost walk to at low tide), nearby Crescent Beach and Sheep's Island. There are really only about three other cottages-homes on Crocketts Beach, so the beach is private and unique in that sense as well. On the south side of the property line landscape by the beach house, there is a walking path that runs through the trees along the south side of the beach house down to the shoreline that residents of the lane have used and are permitted to use for at least going over the passed 86 years. Any other non-guest foot traffic to the shoreline through the cottage property is not permitted. The cottage provides its own private access to the shoreline from its own private cottage property grounds which run to and meet the shoreline, the perspective of which is captured in the accompanying photographs.

The cottage is architecturally unique, reminiscent of a ship with a bowed front, with pristine white ship-lap throughout and a built-in bed.

A split-rail fence contains the ample yard and natural gardens surround the house. It is a pleasing space any time of the day; sit on the patio for morning coffee and watch the sunrise over the ocean or stroll down to the ocean-front beach house for an afternoon of reading.

The main house (cottage), approximately 196' from the shoreline, and the beach house, approximately 72' from the shoreline, have four bedrooms (two king and three queen Mission style platform beds from LL Bean), a built-in twin bed and the carriage house, approximately 49' from the main house (cottage), with four Mission style twin platform beds from LL Bean can sleep four in a way that has the sensibility of a camp-bunk house. The downstairs and upstairs master bedrooms have Mission style platform king beds from LL Bean and ocean views and adjoining bathrooms.

The well-equipped kitchen has spectacular views of the water and opens into the living room and dining room areas, both with ocean views. Plenty of windows offer natural light and light sea breezes.

There are two bedrooms upstairs and one full bath. The first bedroom upstairs is mostly an open space bedroom where children usually stay and it has two queen Mission style platform beds from LL Bean and a second queen Mission style platform bed and one twin built-in bed. This open space bedroom has a view of the water.

The second upstairs bedroom, a master bedroom, has a private bath and one Mission style platform king bed from LL Bean with an ocean view with comfortable furnishings

There is also a beach cottage on the property, located at the water’s edge. The guest cottage offers sleeping space for two on a queen Mission style platform bed from LL Bean, as well as a campaign style desk-table, two slipcovered sitting chairs, a state-of-the-art BioLet 65XL composting commode situated in the beach cottage's exterior closet, an under-counter refrigerator, coffee maker, toaster oven, a flat screen television, cable television, Blu-Ray DVD player and Internet WI-FI, a countertop water dispenser and a spacious deck with a panoramic view of the ocean. This is the perfect place to sit and watch the day come to an end.

There is also a carriage house which has the sensibility of a camp-bunk house as it has two slipcovered couches, a 46" Samsung flat screen television, cable television, a Blu-Ray DVD player, an XBOX360 game box-station, a coffee table and four Mission style twin platform beds from LL Bean. In this sense, the carriage house offers some additional space for some peace and quiet or for children-young adults to have some space for themselves for a bit.

The location of Mahalas Lane is ideal. Owls Head is home of the Transportation Museum, the Owls Head General Store (home of the award-winning Loaded 7-Napkin Burger and old-time penny candy) and the Owls Head Lighthouse where Spot, the Springer spaniel, is buried by the lighthouse bell (see the true story of Lighthouse Dog to the Rescue).

Owls Head is a small, quiet community just minutes from Rockland (the Farnsworth Art Museum, the Primo Restaurant, In Good Company wine bar, Fiore premium Artisan Olive Oils and Vinegars, Planet Toys and Jess's Market for lobsters and fresh seafood - Down East Magazine's readers' choice for best seafood market in Maine).

Thomaston, Rockport and Camden are also nearby. Rockport is the setting for the Samoset Resort (the well-appointed La Bella Vita restaurant with a magnificent view of Penobscot Bay, the tranquil, fresh, clean, seaside aesthetic of The Spa and a beautiful seaside, championship golf course) and Maine Sport Outfitters (offering for purchase or rental items for almost any conceivable sporting interest ranging from kayaking, biking and running to camping and winter sports).

These larger cities offer museums, restaurants, shopping, festivals and endless cultural activities. Cape Air flies into (and out of) Owls Head (the Knox County Regional Airport) from Boston (a one hour flight) and other regional locations. Car rentals (Budget) can be made from the Knox County Regional Airport.

The cottage offers a washer and dryer, Bosch dishwasher, hairdryer, hand held clothes steamer, cable television in the cottage, the carriage house and the beach house and Internet Wi-Fi connection in the cottage and the beach house.

About The Area

The location of the cottage is quiet, peaceful, on the water and a place where families, friends or couples can gather for catching up with each other or getting away for some peace and quiet, for strolling on the beach, for reading (or writing) a good book or for watching the occasional deer or fox pass by in the early morning. The cottage, in Owls Head, is a place where no commercial entity exists but for the Owls Head General Store approximately 2.5 miles away but where within an approximate seven mile drive you can visit Rockland where there is a world class art museum (The Farnsworth), fine dining (The Primo Restaurant, In Good Company wine and tapas bar), art galleries, fine cinema (The Strand), a nice old town Main Street to walk and a bit farther north, the world class Samoset Resort with its beautiful seaside golf course, spa, restaurant overlooking Penobscot Bay, outdoor pool with the same overlook and fitness center. In other words, the cottage provides a location unique with the best of both worlds - waterfront and beach-strolling peace, comfort and commercial-free quiet within a comfortable distance of more modern world accessories.

"Incredible"

Absolutely as charming as the description. A true authentic Maine cottage with plenty of amenities. The main house, carriage house, and the beach house were perfect for my family and grandchildren . The beach house was right on the beach with a spectacular view and was quiet and restful especially on the deck. We left this morning and already miss it! Thank you Paul for sharing "Sunrise Cottage" and letting us experience this special place.

Maine Coast Wonderful

This cottage is the "real deal" - a rural, vintage Maine cottage, with a great view out over the water, and loaded with history and personality. It was very clean, with a well-equiped kitchen, some high end appliances, ample drawer space for clothes, plenty of towels, and great light for reading and cooking. There is a Bosch dishwasher, but no garbage disposal. The cottage is close to wonderful hiking, top notch restaurants, and museums which we really enjoyed. But some of our favorite days were the cold, rainy ones (we were their in mid May) when we had plenty of sleepy, peaceful hours reading and relaxing. The owner, Paul, was friendly, welcoming and offered to help if we needed anything.

Great property & location for the ultimate in family relaxation

Sunrise Cottage is unlike any other property we've ever rented...in a great way! I can't possibly say enough about the perfect location with the beach accessibility, wonderful views of islands & wildlife, and the close proximity to downtown Rockland & Camden for dining out. Be sure to check out Cafe Miranda for some super fresh & funky food! We were able to launch our kayaks easily from the beach and had nightly campfires in the fire pit overlooking the ocean. Even my husband (who has a slightly tough time relaxing) was able to unwind & enjoy the peaceful location & area. We kayaked over to Ash Island on three occasions and successfully hunted for sea glass. Having the 3 separate sleeping quarters was convenient for our extended family & teenagers--not to mention the Xbox 360 in the bunk house. The owner was accessible, friendly & proactive in providing great service. Highly recommended retreat and we'll surely be back.

Breathtaking Views!

It was an awesome boat shaped cottage with fantastic views! Also included a cute beach house and a carriage house equipped for kids to hang out and play games. The cottage supplied all our needs and more! Great place and highly recommend!

I'll be back!

I have been coming to Maine since 1993 and renting houses on the ocean. This cottage on Owl's Head is, by far, the nicest! In fact, this is my second visit. I retired in May, and my sisters, nieces and I wanted to go on a girls trip to celebrate so I recommended this cottage. My family loved it! From the moment we pulled into the driveway, they were struck by the charm of the place. Upon entering the main cottage, we were greeted with fresh flowers in the living room, fresh fruit on the dining room table, and beautiful views of the ocean from the dining room and kitchen. The owner even called us to make sure everything was to our liking. Other amenities included a wonderfully appointed kitchen, a large screen TV in the living room, and free WiFi. The bedrooms have comfortable beds and there are plenty of clean towels. And that's just the main cottage! The finished carriage house is a great place for kids with its own flat screen TV. One of my sisters stayed in the charming and fully furnished beach house down by the ocean and said she could stay there forever. During the day we explored light houses, hiked in nearby Camden Hills State Park, and took an easy day trip up to Acadia Nat'l Park. In the evenings back at the cottage, we enjoyed star gazing around a campfire down at the beach. I definitely recommend this wonderful cottage experience. I know I intend to return.

A true gem!

I'm not one to write reviews on places we've stayed or anything for that matter. However, this place deserves a 5-star review! Not enough space to write how wonderful this cottage was for my family and I. We had never been to Maine and this couldn't have been more perfect. We had 7 people and were so comfortable! In fact, the lay out of the house was truly perfect for us. The shopping, the restaurants (did I mention the amazing lobster almost every day!), the beach, etc were everything you'd want in a vacation. We even had a day trip to Acadia Nat'l Park which was an excellent adventure. Just as important, the owner of the cottage truly loves his place and takes exquisite care of it and ensures that you will have a truly memorable stay. We will definitely be back....not soon enough!

Fabulous cottage! Our favorite vacation spot.

I cannot say enough wonderful things about Sunrise cottage. Our family has stayed here twice and have already started thinking about another trip to Maine. The owner is very nice and seems to always be working to improve the property. He even called to wish us Merry Christmas last year (we had stayed at the property in April). Personal touches like this make all the difference. The cottage itself is very clean and well equipped. The beds are comfortable and each bedroom has a beautiful view of the sunrise. We had snow during our last visit and still had a wonderful time. Rockland is a short drive away and has several great restaurants and an amazing coffee shop. We will definitely be back to sunrise cottage!

Nothing else comes close

We have been vacationing in Maine for 20 years, always renting houses on the ocean. Every year has been a delight - the weather, the food, the people, just breathing the wonderful air. This area is a paradise for we three mid-westerners escaping the St. Louis summers. This year we discovered this amazing cottage that was beyond anything we could have imagined. A perfect location with a view of the ocean out of most every window and every amenity that one could hope for, including large screen televisions, WiFi, large comfortable beds, amazing kitchen, etc. You'll love the charming beach cottage, fully furnished and right on the private beach. Certainly, in our travels, nothing else has come close to this wonderful cottage. The owners did a remarkable job to insure that our stay was the best it could be. Fresh flowers and fruit met us on our arrival and phone calls to be sure that everything was satisfactory. This is a place and an experience not to be missed. We loved it!

You won't want to leave

Is there anything more lovely than an ocean view all to yourself? That is this cottage. Convenient to everything yet unencumbered by people or boat traffic -- just you, the lapping waves, the rising sun and a cup of coffee in the morning, or chatting with friends and family by an oceanside fire in the evening. The house itself is quintessential Maine, with white beaded wood and beamed ceilings, hardwood floors, a fully equipped kitchen and laundry room, and comfy beds with flannel sheets and down quilts for a cozy night's sleep with the windows open to let the waves put you to sleep. This is the Maine I dreamed of as a child, and I can't wait to go back.

Dreaming of Maine

This cottage was exactly what my family needed after a hectic semester. The location was perfect, close enough to Rockland to ride a bike to town for lunch or shopping, but on a quiet, pastoral road with views of the sea from every room. The house was comfortable, clean, neat, and home-like. It had everything we needed and plenty of space for guests and children. When it was rainy, it was relaxing to lay on the sofa and read; when it was sunny, the little cottage near the beach provided a deck on which we could sit and gaze at the ocean. The owner cares for his home and treats renters like friends b/c he knows they will share his love for this place. I would recommend a bike ride or run to Birch Point Beach State Park and lunch at the Owl's Head General Store. They aren't kidding about the hamburgers. We will be back!
