Venice, Florida is known as the shark tooth capital of the world and for its spectacular shoreline. Children and adults alike, love to spend days on the beach combing through the shells for sharks teeth and you can find them easily, you don't need to be a pro and there's always someone on the beach to show you what you are looking for! Don't be alarmed to go into the water as all these teeth are prehistoric teeth and around 16 millions years old. So swimming and fun in the ocean is just fine!I
Daily beach walking is a must! The peace, beauty and tranquility is divine. Plenty of birds -- pelicans, gulls, sandpipers, egrets and even herons -- to blend with the water and sand in creating a beautiful natural landscape. Siesta Key beach voted one of the top 10 in the world is about 20 minutes away and is a must see! On Sunday at sunset they have drumming circles and music. Very interesting and well worth spending some extra time to see.
The Venice Fishing Pier is located at Brohard Park on the south end of the island of Venice, and is owned by the City of Venice. The 700-foot Pier is a great location for fishing and to end the day watching a beautiful sunset. Connected to Sharky's and Fin's restaurants on the Pier, the only beachfront restaurant in the Venice area, the Pier offers Papa's Bait Shop, with live & frozen bait, coffee, treats, jackets, shirts, and more. Nearby are six picnic shelters, two sand volleyball courts, and public restrooms with showers. Open at all times. There is no fee to access the Pier and avid and amateur fisherman of all ages can fish from the Pier without a fishing license.
The Venice Rockery is a must see. Located behind the South County Administration building, it is in a category all on its own. In the evening you can sit and watch the birds fly in to roost for the night and see the alligator swimming below the treed island, making sure that the raccoons can not get to the birds and their eggs or chicks. To watch this balance of nature is absolutely wonderful. Dogs are welcome and do bring your camera!
Don't miss the South and North jetty parks while in Venice. The fishing is great from either side of the jetty. This is one of the best places around Venice to see the sunset. There are often dolphins and manatees close to the jetty and in the warmer months you will likely see a couple Manatees hanging around the jetty too. There is a steady stream of boats negotiating the jetty which are interesting to watch. If there is a strong storm, it is really beautiful to watch the waves crashing over the jetty. There are some benches along the parking area and a place to get a hotdog and drink. The hotdogs are very good. The restrooms and a place to rinse the sand off are at the back of the building. Totally free and highly recommended.
The Waterway Trail is really beautiful and also connects to the legacy trail bike path which is 28 miles round-trip. You are able to bike or walk this wide concrete pathway on both sides of this trail which goes along the inter coastal waterway. There are park benches to stop places to get water places to get snacks & restrooms. It's a beautiful parkway. You can start the trail at Shamrock park or one of the many other parking spots that intersect the trail. Along the way you are likely to see many varieties of birds as well as dolphins, manatees, fish jumping and gopher tortoises! Make sure you have ample water supplies!
Snook Haven is another great place to visit. It's old Florida at the end of a dirt road on the Myakka River. This was the site of many Tarzan films, and it still looks like a jungle. You can rent canoes and paddle along the river to see the birds, turtles and alligators. If you don't like being that close to the water surface you can check the schedule on line and book a river boat tour. In addition there is a fun restaurant, they have their own smoker and sell some great pulled pork sandwiches! On Sundays there is a live band and lots of outdoor dancing. Great place to spend a relaxing Sunday afternoon.
Take a stroll down Venice Avenue with its pink, Italian Renaissance buildings, Mediterranean-style shops and "umbrella-topped" Canary Island date palms. Lots of great restaurants and fun tourist shops - something fun for everyone!
Great choice of restaurants 5 -10 minutes away.
