Details

Home Description

Architect's home with modern kitchen/baths, and living rooms with fireplaces

The house is in a historic village across the street from the 1835 Congregational Church.

The house is a period piece of spacious rooms as they were built, except for modern bath and kitchen. It's a delight to live in this gracious home, filled with light and comfortable space.

There are four large corner rooms on the two floors On the first floor: a central entry hall with a gracious stair up, dining room and library to either side, and straight ahead the doorway opening into a large living room with over-sized fireplace and art and artifacts from around the world. There's a doorway into the modern, enlarged, cooking kitchen and another out into the three-season greenhouse living room of 400 square feet with an even larger fireplace, dining and buffet serving tables, television, plants of all varieties and sizes and comfortable seating for a dozen or more.

The central lawn is bounded by gardens of flowering plants, shrubs, fruit trees and huge maples and a backdrop of a hillside forest of trees. A most beautiful gazebo with grape vine and plantings looks out onto the lawns, a great place for tea, a wine, and conversation.

The village has 22 historic homes, a library dating to 1904 and Southbury's first town hall from 1873 which has been repainted in its original buff, blue, green and dark red colors. The last of twenty former factories on the mill stream and the Methodist Church of 1835 are being restored.

The burial ground is a a quarter mile away with a tombstone for one of the original owners of the house, Dr. Baldwin, the first doctor in the Southbury region.

There's a nearby Audubon Center with bird watching platforms reached by walking along the Pomperaug River and its woods. Many hiking trails are located throughout the area.

The Antiques Trail starts in neighboring Woodbury located in Litchfield County which is noted for its beautiful rolling hills and charming villages, each with its own unique character.
