Smack dab in the middle of Big Bear is this charming farmhouse, complete with its own windmill and backyard barn. Experience a simpler period in America in the charming “moo-cow” farmhouse, and at such a bargain.
The barn-red and cottage-white farmhouse looks much as it would in the early 1900s. All floors are wide-plank pine, and the T&G ceilings are supported by massive wood beams. Care has been taken to keep today’s modern gadgets – the TVs, DVD players and appliances -- behind closed doors to maintain the look of an early American farmhouse.
In the large, eat-in kitchen, the cottage-white, bead-board wainscoting and barn-red walls surround a room filled with country charm. Farm antiques, such as early American utensils, add to the kitchen’s country look. There’s even a deep, double farmhouse sink! You also have the convenience of a washer/dryer in the kitchen, but since it isn't the ringer-type model your grandmother used, you’ll find it hidden behind the barn doors of the laundry closet.
As soon as the sun dips below the west end of the lake, falling temperatures quickly follow on the mountain. That’s when you will want to gather ‘round the fireplace in the living room that keeps the entire farmhouse toasty warm on chilly fall nights. There are additional wall heaters in the bedrooms as well. The linen closet is also filled with numerous blankets and quilts.
When it's time to tuck in the young ones, climb the pine staircase to the second floor where the two bedrooms are separated by a full bath. The master bedroom contains a queen-sized bed and wood cabinet that holds the second TV and DVD player. There’s also a spacious, mirrored closet. The second bedroom (fondly known as the Blue Bear Room) has a bead-board trundle bed with two twin mattresses. This bedroom has sliding glass doors that open to an observation deck with views that are particularly beautiful as the sun begins its western descent. You can keep an eye on the youngsters and your pups playing in the fenced backyard below.
Back downstairs, two more individuals can drift off to sleep watching the flickering flames of the fireplace from the queen sofa bed in the living room. There is a convenient bath just down the hall. That brings the total sleeping capacity to six. Well, it can be seven if one of them is an infant. We have a baby crib for the little one.
For the night owls who don’t want the day to end, there’s a large screen television and DVD player with access to hundreds of movie and sports channels in the living room china cabinet.
In addition to Oktoberfest, the farmhouse is central to all the attractions in town, including Big Bear Lake, which is about a 10-minute drive from your front door. Another five minutes will take you to the Big Bear Village filled with dozens of restaurants and mom-and-pop shops.
