The region is dominated by the Taurus Mountains that sweep down to the sparkling clear sea forming an irregular coastline of rocky headlands and secluded coves. Bathed in sunshine for 300 days of the year. This stunning section of the Turkish coastline is not called the Turquoise coast for nothing. The Mediterranean coast here is literally turquoise blue. Calm, tranquil clear water, perfect for swimming, snorkelling, sailing and generally enjoying oneself. Majestic mountains plunge into the sea and dozens of islands lay scattered about providing a myriad of bays and coves to explore by boat.
Warm and sunny in spring and autumn, wonderful days and cool nights, pretty hot in July and August. Spring and autumn daytime temperatures are generally around the mid to late 20's and July and August temperatures can be 39/40 degrees.
However, being in the foothills of Mt. Bagadad which is about 1000ft above sea level we experience cooling breezes, where as the coastal resort of Olu Deniz and the harbour town of Fethiye will be 4 degrees or so hotter.
The Olu Deniz area
Fethiye is the largest town in the area and is a 15 ride away on the dolmus. Set between wooded mountains and a wide blue bay, it is a bustling market town with plenty of shops, restaurants and cafés, on Tuesdays it boasts the biggest market in the area, some of the best bargains are to be found here. The area is full of small traders and workshops that will fix anything. The cobbled streets are packed with shops and bars, full of life by day and night. The Paspatur or old town is charming.
Visit the weekly market or stroll along the marina and enjoy its rustic charm. There is a vast array of boat and fishing trips from here. A place not to miss is the fish market, you can by your fish from the daily catch and have it cooked by one of the surrounding restaurants, excellent value. Frequent 'Dolmus' services run to and from Ovacik, Hisaronu and the beach at Olu Deniz.
As you drive from Fethiye up the mountain on the road that leads to Olu Deniz, not only do you take in the beautiful scenery but also on a hot summers day you can notice a welcoming difference in temperature. The first area you pass through is Ovacik, this village straddles the main road with mount Babadag to the left, it’s a fairly quite location with a selection of restaurants and shops.
For trekkers the Lycean way starts here. You then come into Hisaronu village. This resort is lively with many shops, restaurants and bars catering extensively for the needs of all age groups. This is a good place to book for the many trips and activities available in the area. For those who want somewhere more laid back there is Olu Deniz, which has the most photographed beach in Turkey and is only a ten minute journey from the villa by the regular Dolmus service down the mountain, here you will be able to find a variety of restaurants and bars with a more relaxed atmosphere than Hisaronou.
There are water sports available from the beach i.e.- water skiing, Para sailing, scuba diving, snorkelling, speedboat hire, pedaloes etc. For the braver of you there is paragliding from the top of Babadag Mountain, landing on the white sands of Olu Deniz beach. If you prefer a more relaxing day on the water there are a selection of boat trips available from both Olu Deniz and Fethiye. Olu Deniz beach sweeps round in a vast crescent of course sand and shingle to the stunningly beautiful and world famous Blue Lagoon which is a national park.
