Essex Cottage View of the Sea, Forest, Rivers, Bird Life any Many More

Details

Home Description

Essex Cottage is situated on the top of the hillside overlooking the sea. Our idea was to create a tree house open to the view of sea, valley and bird life. With shutters open,  window along the length of the house catch the sea breezes while the vented cathedral ceiling keeps it cool and comfortable. It has two bedrooms, each with an ensuite bathroom. There is a queen sized bed upstairs and two twin beds downstairs.  The main bedroom has space to accommodate an extra bed. An outside staircase connects the downstairs bedroom.  The cottage has large porch with comfortable seating, a fully equipped kitchen and large dining area. The infinity pool is connected to the cottage by a path which continues down the hillside to the river and falls. It is rented on a self-catering basis. Guests have full access to the pool and garden.

We are a short drive from 4 of 5 top beaches on the island, as well as the main trail in the forest reserve, Gilpin Trace. Our location is ideal for travelers wanting to explore the natural beauty of the island. Parlatuvier Bay, a 10-minute walk on a path along the hillside, or a two-minute drive, offers excellent swimming and snorkeling. Imagine yourself floating above the coral surrounded by schools of thousands of small fish, or sighting one of the rays that frequently appear, or a shy turtle if you're really lucky. In the late afternoon you can try your hand at fishing off the end of the jetty, or greet the local fishermen as they return with their day's catch. If your timing is just right and you have energy, you might even get a chance to help pull in a seine net filled with small baitfish. We highly recommend, for at least one night, that you linger by the pier until sunset. Your reward is a smashing display of glorious colors as the sun sinks into the western sky. For adventures on the high seas, we can help you to arrange boating or fishing trips. Snorkel equipment is available for our guests.

The village itself is very small with about 350 inhabitants.  There are several good places to eat as well as two well-stocked grocery shops offering an appropriate selection of snacks and drinks. The people here are very friendly and helpful, and many have been involved in building our houses or maintaining the property.

Top quality bird watching attracts many of our guests.  The island’s most renowned bird guide, Newton George, has identified more than 42 different species of land and sea birds, and our guest log has now registered over 60 birds spotted on the property.

Several local trails nearby take you through the rain forest and along rivers to idyllic tropical waterfalls. We can connect you with the top registered guides to help spot and identify the local birds, wildlife and vegetation and share some history of the island.

Our most popular local gathering spot is Glasgow's Bar just 100m up the road. Its upper deck offers you the best view of Parlatuvier Bay. Prime time for a lime, the island word for socializing, is sunset, which can fill the sky with a blaze of color.
