This is our perfect holiday rental for small families. Our Swedish style 3-bedroom and 2-bathroom apartment nicely sleeps 4 people.
The elegant apartment is kids-friendly. The unit looks spacious and bright. Immaculately designed, the apartment is maintained regularly. The kitchen, the dining area, the living room and the balcony are fabulously adorned. You have the facility of dining while not missing the breathtaking views of the surrounding area. The swimming pool is pretty big. It has poolside recliners to sit back and relax. You can marvel at the stupendous hill right from the apartment. Wheelchair is accessible.
The apartment is spacious, sunny, elegant and newly furnished. The entrance hall leads to the kitchen and to a light-filled open-plan living and dining space. There are three bedrooms: a master bedroom (with en suite bathroom) and two further large bedrooms (sharing a second bathroom) which are furnished as a single bedroom/study and single bedroom/dressing room. All linen is white or cream, towels neutral colours, and furniture and furnishings modern Scandinavian style.
The living area and all three bedrooms have full-height, glass double-doors with direct access to 30 square metres of L-shaped, south-facing terrace. There are views over the terrace’s plants to the Mediterranean and surrounding hills. The terrace has a table and chairs for dining, and comfortable sun loungers with plenty of cushions for lazy afternoons.
The fully equipped Danish-designed kitchen has granite worktops and includes fridge, freezer, dishwasher, ceramic hob, electric oven, kettle, toaster, and a full range of glasses, crockery, cutlery and cookware. There are ice packs and cool boxes for picnics and shopping. The tap water is drinkable. The kitchen leads into a separate utility room with sink and washing machine. An iron, ironing board and drying line are provided. Each bathroom has a bath, over-bath shower, basin, lavatory and bidet. There is free communal Wi-Fi.
The apartment maintains a delightful temperature all year round thanks to its excellent natural ventilation system and gentle breezes. In summer, temperatures on the terrace rarely exceed a comfortable 28 degrees, even on the hottest day. In winter, radiators may be needed on the occasional cool evening. However, the Costa Tropical boasts an average of 320 sunny days a year. Even in winter, average daytime temperatures are 18 degrees. In summer the average daytime temperature is 25 degrees, rising to about 30 at midday.
If you simply want to relax, the apartment is very tranquil. There are plenty of novels and recent best sellers, a selection of fiction and non-fiction relevant to Andalucía, maps, travel guides and games. There is a DVD player and a collection of over 50 films and TV boxed sets.
Guests enjoy a large swimming pool set in attractive gardens with sub-tropical plants. There is a life-guard during the summer months.
The apartment is set in a small, secure, gated community with remote control access to the external gate and private underground car park where there is a designated parking space. There are only four floors and our apartment is on the first floor. It is thus not suitable for unsupervised, young children. Stairs and a lift from the car park provide direct access to a spacious gardened area and the apartment’s front door. The apartment itself is all on one level and is suitable for those with restricted mobility. Our English speaking housekeeper lives next door.
The apartment is set on a hillside above the seaside village of La Herradura in Granada Province, 50 minutes’ easy drive from Málaga airport. The village has retained its Spanish character and has everything you need: small supermarkets, excellent bakeries, banks, newsagents, medical services, pharmacies and hairdressers. It has a long beach set in a sheltered, curved bay. There is a daily covered market with fresh: local fish and seafood, cheeses, meat, fruits and vegetables. There is a wide variety of beach-side cafes, tapas bars and restaurants. In the summer several restaurants have live music and flamenco dancing.
Villages only 10 minutes away include Almuñecar (with the remains of a Moorish fortress, and streets that can be traced back to Roman times) and Nerja (famous for its caves and, more recently, as a popular holiday resort with many restaurants, bars and shops). Well worth a visit, especially for lunch, is Frigiliana: a very pretty and typically Andalucían ‘white village’: a Moorish labyrinth of winding, narrow cobbled streets.
There is an excellent hospital in nearby Motril and an English-speaking GP in Nerja.
Malaga Airport is about 50 minutes from the apartment. A new and quiet motorway runs east from Malaga just behind the coast. The apartment is about 5 minutes drive from the nearest slip road.
Generally Andalucia is well served by new motorways which are well maintained and with little traffic.
The apartment has its own secure car parking space and the hire of a car for your stay is recommended.
Culture
The apartment is an ideal base from which to explore the UNESCO world heritage sites in Andalucía: Granada, Córdoba, Seville, Úbeda and Baez. Ronda (with its 18th century bridge towering 120 metres above the canyon floor) and Málaga (the Picasso museum and old quarter) are also well worth exploring.
The Alhambra Palace in Granada and its Generalife gardens (about 50 minutes away) are essential but very popular destinations; it is advisable to book on-line well before you plan to visit.
Beaches
The Costa Tropical has over 20 beaches dotted along its 20 km coast. Some are hidden coves, and many have beach-side cafes, restaurants and tapas bars.
Water sports
The Costa Tropical is home to Europe’s first national Marine Park and is one of Spain’s most popular diving centres. It has several protected bays for beginners and more experienced divers, allowing year round diving. Marine life is varied and spectacular, including octopus, moonfish, damsels, dolphins and a variety of corals.
La Herradura itself is a diving and water sports centre, well known for some of the best reef dives in Europe. You can book tuition from qualified PADI instructors. Boats and water sports equipment can be hired.
Skiing
The Sierra Nevada mountains, about 90 minutes away, are Europe’s most southerly ski and snowboarding resort. The skiing season is from December to May; you can hire equipment for the day. It is possible to ski in the morning and drive down to the coast for an afternoon on the beach!
Walking
The coastline is an area of outstanding natural beauty; a designated 'parque natural'. It provides walks with spectacular views, secluded beaches and pine-clad hills. Less than an hour away, you can walk in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains – the Alpujarras.
Andalucía also hosts the magnificent Doñana National Park, another UNESCO world heritage site. It has a variety of ecosystems and shelters European and African migratory birds, wild boar, fallow deer, badger, mongoose and rare species such as the Spanish imperial eagle and Iberian lynx.
Golf
Many people find that golf is more relaxing and better value on the Costa Tropical than on the Costa del Sol to the west of Malaga. The closest 18 hole golf course is Los Moriscos in Motril, just under 30 minutes’ drive away. The setting is spectacular, with the sea on one side and views to the snow-covered Sierra Nevada mountains on the other. There are two further courses within about 30 minutes’ drive of the apartment and a further three near Granada.
