About The Area

The nearest airport is Faro and flights come there from all over Europe. It is about 11kms away and takes less than 15 minutes.

It depends what you want to do but nearly everyone hires a car as there is so much to do that the enjoyment is enhanced by having one. We have no special arrangement for transfers but I am sure our property manager would be able to organise that at reasonable rates.

Almancil is 2 to 3kms away depending on which part of the town you want to go to and is a lively true Portuguese town which has absolutely everything! There are restaurants of all types and budgets from our favourite ‘Café Nosso’ with lovely seabass and chips for 11.00 euros to ‘A Quinta’ with very, very fine dining, there are 2 large supermarkets and a number of good corner shops, 3 bakeries with bread and pastries to die for, lots of mainly small shops and boutiques, several banks, and two petrol stations. Parking in town is easy and free and taxis to and from Almancil are not too expensive.

Only slightly further away (max 10/15 mins by car) are several beaches of different types from the 6km long sand dune backed Quinto do Lago to the red cliff backed ones of Vale do Lobo, Praia de Loule and Quatiera. 10 mins away is the Algarve’s best water park with huge slides, walls of death and an enormous pool and artificial beach that has a wave machine. There is also a small zoo at this park. There is horse riding, sea water sports, tennis and 12 golf courses all within the same radius.

Again within this timescale there is the old town of Loule, the regional capital, with it’s cobbled streets and famous covered market that on Saturdays spills out all over the surrounding streets when the local farmers bring their produce to market. Surrounding the market are several cafes to have a coffee or a beer and watch the world go by! Loule also has a gypsy market on Saturdays where bargains are to be had especially after bartering! Faro is also 15 mins away and has a large and well renovated old walled city with museums and galleries housed in ancient buildings. There is plenty of shopping to be had in Faro! The big shops are in Algarve Forum and Jumbo shopping which are on the way into the city which has numerous smaller shops and boutiques.

From Faro you can take a ferry to the deserted sandy islands of the world famous nature reserve called the ‘Ria Formosa’. This stretches 40kms or so from Quinto do Lago to the ancient town of Tavira to the east. This stretch of coast has been well preserved by the authorities and apart fro Faro there are only small fishing villages so it is unique and worth a visit. Tavira irself is a lovely old town with ancient bridges, buildings and a castle. Go another 25kms and you reach the massive Guidiana river which forms the border with Spain. There are two magnificent castles there at Castro Marim and lovely boat trips up the river to Alcouten. Seville in Spain is then only just an hours drive further on.

To the west and about 45 mins away are the Monchique mountains with the beautiful springs and buildings at Caldas dea Monchique. Venturing further west Europe ends at the famous windswept Sagres cliffs where you can watch the fishermen cast their lines from the top of the cliffs to the Atlantic sea many hundreds of feet below!

As an alternative to the car there is a local railway service between Lagos in the West via Faro (change trains) to Vila Real de Santo Antonio on the Guidiana river to the East. It really is a local train with stops at most of the towns and villages along the Algarve including Almancil and Loule. From Loule you can even catch a high speed direct train to Lisbon and even Porto in the North at a very low cost!
