Life in Castello is typical of Tuscan medieval villages, with its sunshine colours, its sounds, the churchbell, which signals the various moments of the day, as people greet each other, and the mouthwatering scents of Italian cooking early in the morning, as you wander down to the baker's to get your fresh bread. Giglio loves music! In August Trad.Jazz can be heard in the evenings, played spontaneously by musicians who come to Giglio for their annual stay. The summer season brings a varied programme of entertainment with Concerts, local theatre with evocative weekly performances under the stars in Castello, classical music concerts and many other Musical attractions such as Opera Week with Operas performed outside with renowned singers and orchestra etc. For those who enjoy markets, Castello offers various market days with the latest in Italian house linen: cotton sheets from Florence, well known sports brands for an extra pair of Italian trunks or a bikini.(Save space in your trolley!- Beach towels are inexpensive and worth buying on arrival). The fresh vegetable stall is a must, with delicious grapes, apricots, peaches, melons, fresh spinach, aubergines, home grown tomatoes and huge peppers.

And the beaches! A magnificent choice- a 10 minute drive or bus ride will take you down to Campese Bay with miles of quartz & pirite sand, (free beach areas for your own umbrella) or beach establishments with everything from anti-uvs umbrellas, to loungers, windsurfers, pedal boats, childrens playgrounds, swimming lessons, Scuba Diving Trips & more. Campese Bay has home made ice cream, a pizza baker's, where you can buy a large slice for your lazy lunch on the beach, maybe followed by grapes or peaches from the greengrocers and a big bottle of acqua minerale, and an English novel from the newspaper shop. Giglio has two other beaches which are completely different: Le Cannelle has white soft sand and shallow water- perfect for small children and then Arenella- secluded, with different sand and views.Other bays can be discovered around the island, accessible from boats.(Guided or hired). Day Trips are available from Porto to other Tuscan islands.

The island offers mapped Hiker's Walks with shady pinewoods, donkey tracks down to the sea and exceptional views. Springtime is a riot of coloured flowers and perfume, where country walks become an unforgettable experience.

Along its waterfront, Porto has plenty of restaurants and pavement cafs and Pizzerias, most offering fresh fish. Different shops specialise in Italian Ceramics and fashionwear .It is an interesting little port. The bustle of the Ferry arrivals and departures mix with holiday-makers, fresh from the beach, taking a refreshing evening 'Aperitivo', while relaxing in one of the many waterfront pavement cafs to watch the world go by.
