The origins of Santa Caterina dello Ionio date back over a 1000 years. Fear of the invading Saracens, forced the first settlers to abandon the coast and take refuge in a more isolated place. They chose a hill-top terrace at about 500m above sea level and created a small hamlet. When the Saracens arrived, plundering, looting, bringing destruction and death, legend states that Santa Caterina, armed with her sword, came to defend a small town, bearing her name and thus prevented an invasion.
The cult following of Santa Caterina was largely diffused in the area and had arrived from Alexandria in Egypt, the first Greek settlers in the area, dedicated the town's name to her. In language, the Greek verb “Katairo”, meaning to purify, had been adapted to the symbol of a saint, “Caterina” that had become a “purifier” of the areas blood-stained by the invaders.
The devotion to Santa Caterina can also be seen in the ruins of various monasteries, once lived in by the Basiliani monks who worshiped her. They played an important role in the lives of the townsfolk as they executed various defense strategies and protected the lives of many. Through subsequent invasions, The Greeks, Romans, Arabs, French and Spanish have all conquered or ruled here and left their mark in some way throughout the area.
In the 1500s a defensive wall was built surrounding the town allowing entry through four guarded gateways, only one of these entrances remains to admire today, known as the “Water gate”. The fragmented, turbulent history of Santa Caterina has bequeathed a rare collection of ancient sites to discover and artifacts to view. There are important churches, houses and buildings to visit, that mirrored the taste and celebrated the power of the ruler of that time.
