Surroundings

Our house is located in the lovely rural village Barnay, surrounded by the rolling hills of the "Parc régional du Morvan", in which the famous white Charolais cows graze. Because of the continental climate and the fact that the village is in a valley, a large part of the year the wheather is nice. The name of our house "Le Grand Pic" is due to the great spotted woodpecker. There is a large variety of birds in the garden. From our house you walk right into the varied nature. Chances are that you have an encounter with a fox, deer or wild boar.

Activities

In the Morvan there ar various recreational activities such as swimming, sailing, mountain biking, horseback riding, canoeing, etc. For those who prefer the city and culture there is plenty of choice nearby. At 15 km. there is the "Gallo-Roman" city of Autun where you can visit several relics from the Roman period including the Augustodonum, an amphitheater of 70 AD, the temple of Janus and remnants of ancient city walls and gates. There is the beautiful cathedral of Saint-Lazare, whose construction began in the 12th century. In the center of Autun is a nice square surrounded by terraces and a beautiful town hall and theater. On Wednesday and Friday here is a market and under the town hall a fresh products market. Just outside the city is a 12-hole golf course.

At 14 km. is the city Arnay le Duc, where in the summer every Thursday evening various festivities are organized. The gourmet Saulieu (20 km) is also a recommendation. A little further away (60 km) but definitely worth a visit, is the capital of Burgundy, Dijon, with a beautiful old center.

A half hour drive from Barnay is the wine city Beaune, with its lovely shops, squares and restaurants. Definitely a "must" is the "Hospices de Beaune" (former hospital from 1880). On the route to Beaune you pass the small famous wine-villages and vineyards where you are invited to taste the famous Burgundy wines.
