Do you know the most visited landmark in Germany? It is the most popular Roman Catholic Cathedral – the Cologne Cathedral Dome that attracts over twenty thousand people per day. The dome is the seat of the Archbishop of Cologne. Don’t you think it is important to know little bit about this distinguished Gothic architecture?
History:
The original construction of the Cologne Cathedral started in 1248, which was closed down in 1473, leaving the masterpiece incomplete. Reconstruction began in the nineteenth century and was finished in 1880. It has also withstood the savagery of the World War II, when it was hit by fourteen aerial bombs. Since 1996, it has become a UNESCO World Heritage Site and many guided tours are offered by companies to history lovers. It is Northern Europe’s largest Gothic church with 144.5 meters length and width of 86.25 m. It has majestic spires (two) that help name it the largest facade church on earth.
Monumental Works:
At a first glance you will say, wow! Amazingly designed and intricately planned, the church certainly strikes the attention and catches the eyes at once. Look at the Portal of Peter, the entrance! It is right in front of the cathedral sumptuously touched and features statues and images of Jesus and disciples. Besides that the nave is adorned with several tombs and structures.
Nearby Attractions:
If you have more time to return to Germany Vacation Rentals, why not head to the nearby attractions and search around the cathedral square? A popular landmark to visit next to the church is the Romisch-Germanisches Museum. If you are famished, the cathedral square has half a dozen of restaurants to flaunt. The square is also reverberated with the performances of street singers and other performers. You might come across a sight of the replica of the famous Mona Lisa painting when taking an easy stroll along the pavement.
